OUTBOUND: Offer Nissim to headline White Party Palm Springs in April
Major 2016 sports tournaments announced

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

In case you haven't heard, the White Party Palm Springs made a huge announcement a few weeks ago in regards to its 2016 festivities. DJ/producer Offer Nissim will headline the main party, a 10-hour dance marathon on Saturday, April 9 at The Palm Springs Convention Center. This is the second time the Tel Aviv-based electronic artist will appear at the White Party - he headlined in 2007 - and it will be one of his rare appearances on the West Coast. Nissim is responsible for some of the best remixes of modern pop songs, primarily Madonna's catalog, and a personal favorite, his eight and a half-minute techno version of Snap's 'Rhythm is a Dancer.'

Next year marks a slight change to the event, stretching from April 8 to 11; the main party usually includes an after party, but in April it will just be one long party, going from 10 p.m. until 8 a.m. the next morning. More information on the White Party, including room rates at the host hotel, Renaissance Palm Springs, is available via the event promoter, jeffreysanker.com.

While we're on the subject, Palm Springs Pride is just around the corner, November 6-8. Among the highlights is a free Block Party on Arenas Road on Saturday, followed by perhaps the Gayest parade you'll see in California on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. Of course, there are events going on all weekend, from pool parties to a Women's Pride Dance. For additional details, check out pspride.org.

Austin, Texas has been selected as the host city for the 2016 Gay Softball World Series (GSWS), bringing teams from throughout North America, including clubs from here in the Northwest, to the Texas capital on August 15-20. About 5,000 participants representing 125-130 teams are expected to compete in the annual tourney, held this past summer in Columbus.

Meanwhile, another city from the Lone Star State is set to host the 2016 North American Gay Volleyball Association (NAVGA) Championships a few months before. Dallas will be the site for the annual volleyball tournament, on May 27-29 at the Kay Baily Hutchison Convention Center, making it the 10th major LGBT sporting event it's hosted since 2004. It will attract 120-plus teams and over 1,000 athletes.

Nashville will get some action as well, chosen as the site for next year's Mark Kendall Bingham Memorial Tournament, or Bingham Cup 2016, hosted by the home club, the Nashville Grizzlies RFC. The event, gathering Gay rugby teams from around the world every two years, is scheduled for May 26-29 with festivities kicking off May 22; it was held in Sydney in 2014. The tournament is named after Mark Bingham, who played on the San Francisco Fog Gay rugby union team and is believed to be one of the passengers who prevented hijackers' attempts from hitting their intended target on September 11, 2011; he died aboard United Airlines Flight 93.

The International Gay & Lesbian Aquatics (IGLA) Championships are set for August 8-14 in Edmonton, Canada. Featured categories are Diving, Open Water, Swimming, Synchro, and Water Polo, all under the roof of the city's Kinsmen Sports Centre.
