Seattle Justice: The Rise and Fall of the Police Payoff System at the Seattle Public Library Oct. 27

Author and former Prosecutor Christopher T. Bayley will discuss his successful fight during the 1970s to end corruption in Seattle law enforcement and politics from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27 at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 1, Microsoft Auditorium.

Library events are free and open to the public. Registration is not required. Parking is available in the Central Library garage for $6 after 5 p.m.

Many view Seattle as a progressive and high-tech city, but Seattle's history includes a hundred years of vice and official corruption. City officials once turned a blind eye to illegal gambling, unlicensed bars and prostitution, in exchange for which police officers demanded 'operating fees' in the form of cash payments from establishment owners. Gay bars in Seattle were forced to make pay-offs during that time. The money trail that started on the streets ended high up in the Seattle Police Department and affected top levels of both city and county government.

Seattle Justice is the story of Bayley's underdog fight to defeat the incumbent Prosecutor, reform the Prosecutor's office, and investigate and prosecute officials for the payoff system. The new Justice Model established by Bayley demonstrated that an aggressive but non-political prosecutor can restore public confidence in the justice system and rebuild law enforcement morale.

This program is presented in partnership with Elliott Bay Book Company. Books will be available for purchase and signing at the reading.
