Dominican Cardinal insults U.S. Ambassador:
'Let him focus on housework since he's the wife to a man'

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Roman Catholic Cardinal Nicolás de Jesús López Rodríguez, archbishop of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, got into a very public spat with U.S. Ambassador James 'Wally' Brewster over remarks the ambassador made about corruption in the Dominican Republic.

'That man needs to go back to his embassy,' López said at a December 2 press conference. 'Let him focus on housework, since he's the wife to a man.'

The archbishop's outburst came about a week after Brewster accused Dominican police officers of assaulting and robbing several U.S. investors who were attending a conference in Santo Domingo.

'Imagine the horror I felt when I got a call from one of them, telling me they had been stopped by a uniformed police officer, that they had a weapon pointed at them, and that they were forced to turn over their wallets,' Brewster said last week.

In response, López accused the ambassador of interfering in Dominican affairs to promote a 'gay rights agenda.'

Brewster, in turn, said that if Dominicans thought the U.S. embassy had too much influence in Dominican affairs, they could return their U.S. visas, a prized possession of the Dominican upper classes.

'I couldn't care less,' López shot back. 'I'm not interested in traveling.'

López and Brewster have clashed before. In June 2014, after the U.S. embassy released a Pride Month video featuring Brewster and his husband, Bob Satawake. López called a press conference, where he demanded that Brewster 'take his Pride elsewhere.'

'Diplomacy is not for that sort of thing,' the archbishop said, 'an absolutely negative propaganda.'

A year earlier, when Brewster was first appointed to the ambassador's post, López joined a group of conservative religious officials protesting the appointment, and he publicly referred to Brewster as a maricón, the Spanish equivalent of 'faggot.'
