Ban Trump! Florida mayor says

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

The mayor of a Florida city says he will ban Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in the wake of Trump's comments about banning Muslims from entering the United States.

Mayor Rick Kriseman of St. Petersburg, Fla., said he would bar Trump from entering his city.

'I am hereby barring Donald Trump from entering St. Petersburg until we fully understand the dangerous threat posed by all Trumps,' Kriseman tweeted.

Kriseman's tweet came only hours after Trump read a formal statement calling for 'a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what the hell is going on.'

'That's obviously not something I would try to do,' Kriseman told the Tampa Bay Times later. 'But his statement was kind of ridiculous, so I thought that it deserved an equal response.'

Other mayors agreed with Kriseman.

'If I had the power, the only banning that would be done is that I would ban that asshole from Philadelphia,' said that city's Mayor Michael Nutter the next day. 'We don't have any room for that kind of stupidity here.'

Braddock, Pa., Mayor John Fetterman also chimed in, calling Trump a 'jagoff.' Fetterman explained that 'jagoff' is Pennsylvania coal country slang for 'stupid.'

A petition to ban Trump from entering the United Kingdom has gathered more than 230,000 signatures.

'The UK has banned entry to many individuals for hate speech. The same principles should apply to everyone who wishes to enter the UK,' the petition reads.

Twenty-four members of Parliament have also petitioned the British government to bar Trump.

Meanwhile, other Republicans tried to distance themselves from Trump's remarks, with even hardline former Vice President Dick Cheney saying Trump had gone too far.

'I think this whole notion that somehow we can just say no more Muslims, just ban a whole religion, goes against everything we stand for and believe in,' Cheney said in a radio interview. 'I mean, religious freedom has been a very important part of our history and where we came from. A lot of people, my ancestors got here, because they were Puritans.'

Even Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu - certainly no apologist for Muslims - criticized Trump.

'The prime minister rejects the recent comments by Donald Trump with regard to Muslims. Israel respects all religions and diligently guards the rights of all its citizens,' a statement from Netanyahu's office said.

Donald Trump announced on December 10 that he would cancel his planned trip to Israel, after Netanyahu criticized his plan to bar Muslims from entering the US.
