BEST OF MUSIC 2015: Singles

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

These are the songs that stood way out from an impressive long list of amazing singles from 2015, in ranking order.

1. 'Let It Happen' - Tame Impala
This trippy number, off the Grammy-nominated Currents album, is further proof that Tame Impala is one of rock's best newest bands. From beginning to end, but especially the last couple of minutes, it's a genius track. 'Let It Happen' was the song I most couldn't get out of my head in 2015.

2. 'Runaway (U & I)' - Galantis
This global club smash by Swedish electronic duo Galantis inspired a lot of great remixes, but the Kaskade Remix is tops. Credit goes to the original track, though, a dreamy and infectious tune I kept blasting and dancing to all year.

3. 'Hello' - Adele
She may have been absent for 3 or 4 years, but Adele made up for lost time with this emotional, near-haunting ballad that had us rolling in a deep box of Kleenex.

4. 'Lean On' - Major Lazer & DJ Snake (featuring MØ)
Hard to believe both Rihanna and Nicki Minaj turned down this mid-tempo single, but fortunately Danish artist MØ came to the rescue and helped make it a worldwide hit, a collaborative project with Diplo-led Major Lazer and producer DJ Snake.

5. 'Blank Space' - Taylor Swift
Technically, this hit from Swift's mega-selling 1989 album came out last year, but it carried over to 2015 and is up for Record and Song of the Year honors at the forthcoming Grammy Awards. It's one of Tay-Tay's finest.

6. 'Let It Go' - James Bay
No, this isn't a cover of the Disney song. It's an original, gorgeous, effortless track from English singer-songwriter James Bay. That delicate guitar background is to die for.

7. 'King Kunta' - Kendrick Lamar
If you still haven't heard any of Kendrick Lamar's music, start here. This groovy single from the highly acclaimed album To Pimp a Butterfly proves why he's rap's new king.

8. 'Freedom' - Allen Stone
This soulful pop track from Stone's Radius album begs to be sung and danced along to in the shower. A catchy chorus, slick horns, funky guitar riff, and a few hallelujahs - what more could you want?

9. 'Pedestrian at Best' - Courtney Barnett
If Liz Phair and The Breeders had a baby, and that baby wrote a song, it would be this punkish cut from Australian newcomer Courtney Barnett.

10. 'Roses' - The Chainsmokers (featuring Rozes)
The coolest slow jam of the year goes to this electronic plum from NYC-based DJs The Chainsmokers featuring Philly vocalist Rozes. The bubbly keyboards and heavy synthesizer riffs make it memorable.
