THE SOUNDS OF SUMMER:
Eight new albums to chill out to in the coming months

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

Summer sun and cool tunes are a great combination. Whether you're barbecuing, laying by the lake, or just chilling out at home, it's important to have good music around. Here are eight albums coming out soon to add to your summer mix.

Dangerous Woman - Ariana Grande
May 20

Ariana Grande went from being a regional children's theater performer in Annie and Wizard of Oz to starring in a Disney comedy to appearing in Ryan Murphy's teen drama Scream Queens. But where she excels most is at singing, evidenced on her Grammy-nominated breakthrough, 2014's My Everything, which produced several hit singles, including 'Break Free' and 'Love Me Harder.' On her new album, Dangerous Woman, featuring the title track as the initial single, Grande co-writes six of the eleven songs and collaborates again with Nicki Minaj on the cut 'Side to Side.'

Black - Dierks Bentley
May 27

Country hunk Dierks Bentley interviewed years ago with Seattle Gay News [February 27, 2009] and for that we're always thankful. Something else we're thankful for is new music from him, such as the Phoenix-bred cowboy's newest offering, Black. Although the first single 'Somewhere on a Beach' bowed to radio stations in mid-January, it isn't until five months later that fans could listen to all of it. The album was titled after his wife Cassidy's maiden name, but it also reflects a 'universal story of breakups, hookups, mess-ups and everything in between,' in other words, it's a little dark. Bentley will perform September 22 at the Washington State Fair, in Puyallup.

Love You to Death - Tegan and Sara
June 3

Lesbian sister act Tegan and Sara Quinn are back in action with their latest release, Love You to Death, the follow-up to 2013's very successful Heartthrob album. Produced by Greg Kurstin (Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Sia), the ten-track record includes the first official single 'Boyfriend' and two promotional tracks, 'U-Turn' and '100x.' In an interview with DJ Matt Wilkinson, Sara said the song 'Boyfriend' is about a love triangle she found herself in with another girl. 'Obviously, being gay, there's sort of a bit of a gender twist in the song, and I get that that sometimes doesn't seem immediately relatable to everybody, whether they're straight or whatever. But this idea, you know, that we've all been in that situation where we really like someone and we want to make it official, and they're not ready, that's what the song is about.' Tegan and Sara will perform October 4 at the Moore Theatre.

Strange Little Birds - Garbage
June 3

It's been four years since Garbage put out a new album and it's about time! The Scottish outfit, led by the bad-ass Shirley Manson, began recording Strange Little Birds in 2013 in LA and it's described as more 'cinematic and atmospheric' by band member Butch Vig; both Vig and Manson have interviewed separately with Seattle Gay News. The new album includes the leadoff single 'Empty,' which has some pretty dark lyrics, plus ten other tracks.

The Definition of... - Fantasia
June 10

R&B singer and 'American Idol' season three champion Fantasia Barrino releases her fifth studio album next month, although a complete track list has yet to be revealed. The Grammy winner did, however, introduce fans to the first single from the record, titled 'No Time for It,' and also quietly put out another track, 'Ugly,' a month ago. The Definition of... appears to feature a collaboration with R. Kelly, seen with Fantasia inside a studio in a clip posted to her Instagram account.

Last Year Was Complicated - Nick Jonas
June 10

Boy band member-turned-solo artist-turned actor-turned-total hottie Nick Jonas returns to the music forefront with his latest effort, Last Year Was Complicated, which could be a personal statement aside from the album title. From relationship breakups to publicly confessing he's had a lot of sex to starring in a much-anticipated film about fraternity hazing, life has definitely been eventful for the 23 year-old. Last Year Was Complicated features collaborations with Big Sean, Tove Lo, Danielle Mason and Ty Dolla $ign. 'Close' is the album's leadoff single. Nick Jonas will perform August 21 at Key Arena; he and Demi Lovato have already canceled their joint North Carolina shows this summer in protest of the HB2 law.

The Getaway - Red Hot Chili Peppers
June 17

Anthony Kiedis and company finally return with The Getaway, the legendary band's first album since 2011. The boys - Kiedis, Flea, Chad Smith, Josh Klinghoffer - had intended for the record to be released sooner, but a snowboarding accident sidelined Flea for several months and delayed the album from moving forward. Fortunately, it was completed late last year and is ready to hit record stores in June. The first single is 'Dark Necessities.'

Home of the Strange - Young the Giant
August 12

Not much is known about Young the Giant's forthcoming album, other than its first single 'Something to Believe In' and a teaser track put out a month ago called 'Amerika.' That's pretty much it. The Southern California band, which interviewed with Seattle Gay News in-person years ago at Key Arena, [December 16, 2011] rose to fame on the strength of two big hits, 'Cough Syrup' and 'My Body.' Home of the Strange is currently set for a mid-August release date.
