Trump on Trans rights:
Rescind Obama's directives, but 'protect everyone'

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

As he's done on many other issues, Donald Trump tried to have it both ways when discussing Transgender rights with the Washington Post.

In an interview published May 16, Trump says that as president he would rescind the Obama administration's directives protecting Trans Americans, but he still wants to 'protect everyone.'

'It is a very, very small portion of the population,' Trump told the newspaper, 'but as I said, you have to protect everybody, including small portions of the population.'

Nevertheless, he also repeated the conventional Republican line that Obama had overreached, and that civil rights matters should properly be left to state governments.

'I think from that standpoint, [states] should come up with a policy that's going to work for everybody and protect people,' he said.

Trump previously said he thought North Carolina 'went too far' with HB 2, the new state law that repeals local civil rights protections for LGBT residents, including the right of Trans people to use gender-appropriate restrooms.

US Attorney General Loretta Lynch framed the administration's directive protecting Trans Americans as an extension of federal civil rights law, but in the interview Trump seemed to deny that Trans rights are civil rights.

'I think it's a people thing,' he said.

'I think we have to help people,' he explained. 'I don't view it as civil rights or not civil rights. I think it's something where we have to help people - and hopefully the states will make the right decisions.'

Asked whether he personally knew any Trans people, either as an employer or as a social acquaintance, Trump said he did not.

'I have not had any exposure to it at all,' Trump said. 'Now, I may not know about it, but I do not think I have any exposure to it from the standpoint of knowing people.'

But Trump said he wants to learn more about Transgender people.

'It's actually a very interesting subject to me,' Trump said. 'It's certainly an issue that's getting a lot of play and it's an issue that I'm studying very closely.'
