Reshuffle: Marko Liias runs for State Treasurer, Jim Moeller runs for Congress

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

In a major reshuffle only a day before the candidate-filing deadline, two veteran political leaders will seek new offices.

State Senator Marko Liias announced on May 19 that he will run for Washington State Treasurer, and Rep. Jim Moeller, who was running for Lieutenant Governor, switched over to run for a Congressional seat.

'I am running for Treasurer to stand up for middle class families just like the one I grew up in,' Liias said in a statement.

'My parents both emigrated from Finland; my dad built houses and my mom was a lunch lady. As a family we've experienced tough times, so I know from personal experience that we need to do more to help families in our state save for college and prepare for retirement.

'This means working to ensure that our GET program and our pension funds remain fully funded and sustainable. It also means working with the private sector to create better, cheaper options for every family to save for retirement and for college.'

Liias became a Senator in January 2014 after serving six years in the State House. He has been endorsed by 10 Senate colleagues, including the 43rd District's Jamie Pedersen, 18 House members, and AFSCME Council 2, a union which represents 16,000 public employees.

Incumbent Treasurer Jim McIntyre is not running for reelection. Besides Liias, two other Democrats and two Republicans have filed for the job.

Moeller, a State Rep since 2002, had been running for Lieutenant Governor but switched at almost the last minute to challenge Republican Congresswoman Jaimie Herrera Beutler in the 3rd Congressional District. The 3rd District includes Vancouver and a swath of Southwest Washington.

'I've spent my life representing the families of Clark County,' Moeller said. 'As a public servant, my goal is to basically give the representation we deserve. Unfortunately, it is not happening in Washington D.C. I emphatically intend on changing that.'

Herrera Beutler, in Congress since 2011, is merely a 'rubber stamp' for Republican House leaders, Moeller charged.

'I don't think Jaime has represented the district very well in the last six years,' he said. 'She has been disengaged from serving as our representative. We need principled leadership Washington and I know that I can provide that.'

Both Liias and Moeller are openly Gay.
