Florida Republicans shed crocodile tears for Orlando victims

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Even before most of the bodies had been removed from the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida's leading Republican politicians stood in front of TV cameras and shed crocodile tears for the dead Gays and Lesbians they had scorned in life.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said the shooting was 'heart-wrenching,' adding that 'our hearts are broken for the injuries and the loss of life that occurred here early this morning.'

'This is an attack on our people,' Scott tweeted later. 'An attack on Orlando. An attack on Florida. An attack on America. An attack on all of us.'

The governor failed to mention that Pulse was a Gay bar and the victims all members or friends of the LGBT community. Later, Scott told TV reporters he wanted Florida to be an 'inclusive' state, again without mentioning what communities he intended to include.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi at least acknowledged who had been targeted in the assault on Pulse.

'Anyone who attacks our LGBT community, anyone who attacks anyone in our state will be gone after with the full extent of the law,' Bondi told reporters.

The truth, however, is that Scott and Bondi have gone out of their way to ensure that Florida is not inclusive of its LGBT community. As Florida's top legal officers, Scott and Bondi spent millions of tax dollars fighting marriage equality in their state, charging that Gay and Lesbian couples could not possibly be fit parents.

Bondi, by the way, is now under investigation for charges that she declined to participate in a class action lawsuit against Trump University in return for a hefty campaign donation from Donald Trump.

Unsuccessful presidential hopeful Sen. Marco Rubio also managed to mention Florida's LGBT community, unlike Scott.

If 'this [mass shooting] is something inspired by radical ideology,' Rubio said, 'then I think common sense tells you that he targeted the gay community because of the views that exist in the radical Islamic community about the gay community.'

Rubio neglected to add that his own views of the Gay community are less than friendly.

'You have to really have a ridiculous and absurd reading of the US Constitution to reach the conclusion that people have a right to marry someone of the same sex,' Rubio said before the US Supreme Court ruled that there is, indeed, a right to marry someone of the same sex.

Rubio supports the so-called 'First Amendment Defense Act' (FADA), which would allow government employees to discriminate against LGBT people under the guise of 'religious liberty' and had vowed to appoint both an attorney general and Supreme Court justices who would back up government officials who discriminate against LGBT people.

As a presidential candidate, Rubio also promised to repeal 'every single one' of President Obama's executive orders. He explicitly called for repealing orders that protect LGBT people from discrimination.

'On my first day in office, they're gone,' he promised.

Rubio has recorded robocalls for the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), which named him a 'real marriage champion.' He has also raised money for the Florida Family Policy Council, which claims that gayness is an 'artificial social construct' that is 'dangerous' to society.
