The Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society presents The Yeoman of the Guard

Can a condemned war hero escape the axe in Gilbert & Sullivan's dramatic comic opera?

The Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society presents for its 62nd season The Yeomen of the Guard or The Merry Man and his Maid, the most dramatic opera of the Gilbert and Sullivan canon. The show opens on Friday, July 15 for ten performances at the Bagley Wright Theatre.

It premiered at the Savoy Theatre in London, England on October 3, 1888, and was the eleventh collaboration between Gilbert and Sullivan. Many feel this is Sullivan's best score.

The story, as usual, is convoluted and concerns a condemned Colonel, a traveling troupe, a masked marriage, a mysterious escape, and a jilted Jester. It balances joy and despair, and hope and sacrifice.

Hal Ryder is the producer for Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society and directed The Yeomen of the Guard in 2000, the last time the Society produced this show. Ryder has brought together a new artistic team for this production.

New this year to Seattle G&S is stage director Paul Budraitis. Paul has worked with Seattle Repertory Theatre, On the Boards, New City Theatre, The Degenerate Art Ensemble, Cafe Nordo, Annex Theatre, Balagan Theatre, and Cornish College of the Arts, among others. His solo performance, (IN)STABILITY, was commissioned and produced by On the Boards, and his production of David Mamet's Edmond received a Seattle Times 'Footlight Award.' At Seattle Repertory Theatre, Paul directed the world premiere of Elizabeth Heffron's Bo-Nita.

Also new this year is Music Director Natalie Lerch, who is a Professor in the Music Department at Cornish College. Conductor Bernard Kwiram returns to lead an orchestra of 28 for Sullivan's best music in Yeomen.

Mark Rabe plays Jack Point, the tragic-comic Jester lead of the show. Mark has worked as a music director/pianist/singing coach and singer in Seattle's music theatre and cabaret scene for more than 25 years.

Mark Rabe's music direction credits include: Seattle Repertory Theatre, ACT Theatre, Seattle Children's Theatre, Showtunes Theatre Company, Stage Right Theatre, Second Story Repertory, Centerstage, Renton Civic, C.L.O., and many others. He has toured widely as accompanist for Frank Ferrante's 'An Evening with Groucho.'

Yeomen performance dates at the Bagley Wright Theatre are: July 15-17, July 22-24, and July 29 & 30. They include two Saturday matinees, and two Sunday matinees.

Tickets are $40 for the general public, $36 for seniors and students are $16. For tickets, contact Brown Paper Tickets at www.yeomen.brownpapertickets.org or call 800-838-3006.

Visit the Society's website at www.pattersong.org for more information about Yeomen, the Society, or to order DVDs of our previous shows. All 13 Gilbert & Sullivan operettas performed by the Society are available on DVD.

The Society also offers a handsome boxed set of its productions of the G&S canon (13 operas) plus Cox & Box and the Gilbert-and-Sullivan-based ballet, Pineapple Poll, choreographed by Donald Byrd.

The Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society is a non-profit, community arts organization whose funding is provided by member donations, tickets sales, and local grants. It is dedicated to performing the works of Gilbert & Sullivan and others to the highest artistic standards and offering family entertainment at affordable prices.
