'RuPaul's Drag Race' kicks off in March with 13 new contestants

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

It's that time again. When a new batch of contestants from around the country compete for the glitteriest title in drag queendom, a chance to be crowned the winner on 'RuPaul's Drag Race.' Thirteen performers have been chosen for the ninth season, which gets underway next month, although the specific date has yet to be revealed.

There are no contestants this season from Seattle, the closest by road mileage would be 25 year-old Valentina from Los Angeles and the furthest is Charlie Hides from Boston, but originally from London, England, who at 52 becomes the oldest queen to vie for the title. Two girls each from New York City and Brooklyn were selected, Alexis Michelle, aged 33, and Peppermint, aged 37, will represent The Big Apple, while 22 year-old Aja and 29 year-old Sasha Velour are hoping to snag the crown for their side of town after NYC's Bob the Drag Queen won last year.

Two competitors were also picked from Las Vegas, 23 year-old Farrah Moan and 28 year-old Kimora Blac, who I believe is the first Vietnamese contestant on the 'Race.' From the South, we have Eureka, aged 25, from Johnson City, Tennessee and Nina Bo'Nina Brown, aged 34, from Riverdale, Georgia. The Midwest is repped by 26 year-old Jaymes Mansfield from Milwaukee and 27 year-old Shea CouleƩ from Chicago, and rounding out the group is Orlando-based Trinity Taylor, aged 31.

Returning judges are RuPaul, who earned his first Emmy Award for hosting the popular Logo TV program, and Michelle Visage. And although we'll have to wait to find out which guest judges will appear on the show, it has been confirmed that Lady GaGa will surprise the contestants sometime this season.
