Over 100 women sign on to Seattle Times response letter in support of Teresa Mosqueda for City Council

Signers include Seattle mayoral candidates Jenny Durkan and Cary Moon, US Rep. Pramila Jayapal, and dozens of current and former elected officials

Over 100 women signed on to a letter in support of Teresa Mosqueda in response to The Seattle Times endorsement in the Position 8 [City Council] race on Monday. The piece, which cites her opponent's 'experience' and 'reasonable perspective' in making their endorsement, was met with anger, frustration, and disappointment from women across Seattle who have too often had their 'professional experience, accomplishments, and credentials questioned, minimized and too often underrated.'

The letter, which came together as a response to an outpouring of support to the Mosqueda campaign, calls out that, 'Women should get credit for the work we do, and for our hard-won experience. We must stop making excuses or standing by while others overstate their resumes at the expense of women whose qualifications, experience, and track record are indisputable.'

'I was prepared for the Times to push back on my platform - because as a progressive leader I am pushing for real solutions to our housing crisis, more investments in our health care, and overdue protections for workers and the most vulnerable among us,' Mosqueda said. 'What I wasn't prepared for is the language they used to dismiss my experience, minimize my accomplishments, and disparage my collaborative approach which has led to progressive, positive policy changes over the years. We can disagree on policy and vision for the city, but we can't let this false narrative about inexperience and a lack of objectivity to go unchecked.'

Mosqueda has earned the endorsement from more than 200 progressive organizations and diverse community leaders across Seattle. She won the primary election with almost one-third of the vote in an eight-way election. Mosqueda is a first-time candidate whose work includes encouraging others to run for political office.
