Medieval Women's Choir present Spring Celebration concert March 10

MEDIEVAL WOMEN'S CHOIR
SPRING CELEBRATION
TRINITY EPISCOPAL PARISH
MARCH 10

Today, it is hard to imagine how life in ages past was governed by weather and the passing seasons. Any Seattleite who has ever braved the lingering chill at an outdoor cafe in a warm coat in order to drink in the first tentative rays of spring sunshine can understand the exuberance with which medieval Europeans looked forward to spring: the balmy afternoons, the symphony of birdsong, the budding of trees and the explosion of flowers, and especially the stirrings of young love. All these things were extolled in song, and we invite you to join the Medieval Women's Choir in casting off the gloom of winter through a celebration of spring.

The concert features a number of works from the Carmina Burana manuscript, the same source in which Carl Orff found the texts he set for his modern work for the same name. The original Carmina Burana was compiled around 1230 and is one of the most important sources of music and poetry of the golliards, wandering students and clerics known for their riotous living and their satiric poems lampooning the rich and powerful. The choir will also perform motets from 13th-century Paris in which two texts - one sacred, one profane - are sung simultaneously; tender rondeaux by Adam de la Halle; and love songs by the titan of medieval France, Guillaume de Machaut.

The concert will be held on Saturday, March 10 at 8pm, at Trinity Episcopal Parish (609 8th Ave.). Tickets prices: $25 advance / $15 student / $30 at the door. Advance tickets available at https://singspring.brownpapertickets.com/.

About Medieval Women's Choir
Led by Artistic Director Eric Mentzel, the Medieval Women's Choir is dedicated to recreating and presenting medieval masterworks to increase knowledge and appreciation of this beautiful yet less familiar body of music. The choir was founded by the late Margriet Tindemans, a revered medieval scholar, performer, and teacher. Now in our 27th year, we are one of the very few non-professional choirs in the United States to specialize in medieval repertoire. Open to all women in the Seattle area interested in studying and performing medieval music, we sing in many languages, with dialectic variations from the period, accompanied by instrumentalists and vocal soloists with expertise in medieval musical performance.
