SCOTUS fallout begins: Racists already using wedding cake decision to justify turning away people of color

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Mere hours after the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of a Colorado baker who refused to supply a wedding cake for a Gay couple, a South Dakota legislator added that businesses should be able to turn away customers based on race.

In a Facebook post, South Dakota State Representative Michael Clark, a Republican, called the high court's decision in Masterpiece Cake Shop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission a 'win for freedom of speech and freedom of religion.'

Clark went on to say that business owners should even be able to reject people of color.

'He should have the opportunity to run his business the way he wants,' Clark wrote. 'If he wants to turn away people of color, then that['s] his choice.'

In a subsequent interview with the Argus Leader newspaper, Clark said that business owners with strongly held beliefs should be able to turn away customers.

'If it's truly his strongly based belief, he should be able to turn them away,' Clark said. 'People shouldn't be able to use their minority status to bully a business.'

The next day, Clark had second thoughts. In another Facebook post made 24 hours later, he apologized for his previous 'very racist' remarks.

'I made some comments here on Facebook, defending a Colorado Baker [sic] decision not create a cake for a Homosexual [sic] wedding,' he wrote on Facebook.

'The comments I made were very racist. I would like to apologize for those comments. Businesses should not be able to discriminate solely based on race, sex, national origin, age, or handicap.'

Clark is running unopposed for reelection to the South Dakota House.
