SGN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEWS: Alki Beach Pride to feature 'American Idol' alum DeAndre Brackensick and singer/songwriter Lakin on July 21

by MK Scott - SGN Contributing Writer

DEANDRE BRACKENSICK
AND LAKIN
ALKI BEACH PRIDE
July 21

Saturday, July 21 will mark the 4th Annual Alki Beach Pride. The event will be held from 11am to 6pm at 59th Ave SW and Alki Ave SW. This year's theme is 'COME OUT and Float at the Beach.' The event will be hosted by Thadayus and will feature music by DJ Ms Cruz Entertainment & DJ Fred Eddison along with live entertainment by Louvel, Visage 'Legs' LaRue, Izohnny, singer/songwriter Lakin, and 'American Idol' alum DeAndre Brackensick. Enjoy DJ'd and live entertainment, FREE food, and hang out at the beach! For more information, visit https://www.alkibeachpride.org/

From 2009 to 2012, I was proud of my work as being the only Northwest LGBT media to cover the 'American Idol' tour. I met DeAndre Brackensick at the Key Arena in 2012. I could tell there was something magic about him. He had lots of passion when talking about his Gay fans and that he had family who were Gay and that he grew up around lots of drag queens. Still I was surprised when he confirmed that he is Bisexual. I could find no mention of this online; just that he'd had a short-term relationship with 'American Idol' Season 11 runner-up, Jessica Sanchez. I was able to catch up with DeAndre, now 23, by email (on July 17) with some questions about his upcoming appearance this weekend.

MK Scott: DeAndre, we met about 6 years ago on the 'America Idol' tour, at the Key Arena and it was joint interview with Elise Testone. What have been doing in the last 6 years?

DeAndre Brackensick: Ahh, beautiful! I remember that interview! Hope you're well! I've been working a lot the past 6 years. Went to college in Hawaii, have been traveling, singing, spent the last year living in Melbourne, Australia recording my album Black Denim that just released. And I plan on touring that for the next year!

MK: So, you are coming to the Alki Beach Pride party this Saturday. What is planned?

DeAndre: I'll be at Alki Beach Pride singing a set mixed with originals and covers and just enjoying the day and being around beautiful people.

MK: What does Pride mean to you?

DeAndre: Pride is an important time to me, being part of the LGBTQ community. It's a time for me to reflect and remember who I am and is to be celebrated not only for this month but the whole year. Even though we have progressed in the world, it's still hard to be LGBTQ. There's still little kids out there and adults with no support from family, public bullying, even homeless because of who they are. So I think pride is necessary to show not only the world, but most of all our community, that it's okay to love and live and we'll always have a place in the world.

MK: What part of the LGBTQ community do you identify as?

DeAndre: I identify as Bisexual.

MK: WOW! Single or attached?

DeAndre: Yes, I'm single.

MK: In 2012 you mentioned J-Lo was a huge supporter of yours. Do you still keep in touch?

DeAndre: Unfortunately, me and J-Lo don't keep in touch, but I still love her.

MK: Also in 2012 you revealed that you had a connection to the LGBTQ community through your Lesbian aunt and being raised around drag queens. Do you have any celeb drag queens that you follow?

DeAndre: And yes, my aunty is happily married to her wife since last year, July, still goin' strong, and yes, I do have a few celeb drag queens that follow me, my girl Adore Delano, Delta Work, Trinity K. Bonet and Coco Montrese.

MK: What is next for you?

DeAndre: What's next for me is I'm getting my album tour dates set up and sharing my music.

Also appearing at Alki Beach Pride will be Lakin. According to her website: 'Lakin is a singer/songwriter with a voice sweeter than honey, whose combination of genre-defying musical styles, stunning melodic gifts, beauty, and warmth shine through her heartfelt lyrics and powerful performances. She grew up in an entertainment-based family in Riverside, Çalifornia and went on to major in jazz studies at Long Beach State. With much music in her roots, Lakin's musical style is a mixture of pop and soul with a twist of folk. Lakin has cultivated a fan base throughout Southern California, opening for such acts as Sheryl Crow, Colbie Caillat, Brian McKnight, Sheila E., and Gladys Knight. On her debut album, If Night Turns to Daylight, Lakin displays her multiple talents of writing, performing, arranging, and producing. Her striking collection of songs represents a revolution of the spirit - reflecting themes that go beyond the superficial and into the deeper human experience of the reconciliation of the soul.'

MK Scott: So, you are coming to the Alki Pride Beach Party this Saturday. What is planned?

Lakin: I will be playing an acoustic set with guitar and vocals this weekend.

MK: What does Pride mean to you?

Lakin: Pride is a privilege. The fact that we can celebrate who we are freely is something that I don't take for granted. I'm happy to represent a small part of the LGBT+ community in this celebration.

MK: You have opened for Sheila E. and Sheryl Crow. Who in music inspires you?

Lakin: I'm inspired by any music maker who can tell their truth through song. I love singer/songwriters, especially, who are able to write about their own stories and bring them to life in the kind of music that people can relate to.

MK: What is next for you?

Lakin: I am currently in the middle of making my 2nd full-length album! I think this collection of songs will be a very intimate look into the last season of my life and I'm excited to share that with my audience. The first single is set to be released late this summer/early fall.

MK: Tell us a little about your debut LP album, If Night Turns to Daylight?

Lakin: That album was my first full-length album and I had the privilege of writing and producing all the songs on it. Musically, it was incredibly diverse. I really wanted to try a lot of different things to see how I could stretch myself musically. It will always be a special project to me.

MK: In your bio it says that you have a voice sweeter than honey. What does that mean to you?

Lakin: I suppose that kind of description of my voice is what I hear the most from my audience! I've heard that I have a very non-offensive tone, which I'll take any day.
