'Wandering & Wondering' offers free site-specific events at Kubota Garden and Seattle Japanese Garden

Joan Laage (Kogut Butoh), a founding member of DAIPANbutoh Collective, is pleased to present 'Wandering & Wondering,' a free annual site-specific contemplative and improvisational butoh dance event to be held at Kubota Garden and the Seattle Japanese Garden this summer.

On Sunday, July 29, Laage will direct 'Wandering & Wondering' at Kubota Garden from 12-3pm. Kubota Garden is located at 9817 55th Ave S, Seattle 98118 in the Rainier Beach neighborhood.

On Thursday, August 2, Laage will direct the 8th annual event at the Seattle Japanese Garden from 3:30-6:30pm. 'Wandering & Wondering' at the Seattle Japanese Garden will be a free 1st Thursday event.

The Seattle Japanese Garden is located at 1075 Lake Washington Blvd E., Seattle 98122 and is located off the south entrance to the Washington Park Arboretum in the Madison Valley neighborhood.

Over a three-hour period, visitors to the gardens will encounter dancers and musicians dispersed in surprising locations throughout the gardens as the performers engage in a minute-by-minute response to all the scents, sounds, sights and sensations of the gardens.

Wander through the extensive gardens and wonder at the sights, sounds, and spirits emerging from the landscape. Experience the beauty and tranquility of the gardens in a unique way.

This year's dancers at Kubota Garden are Bruce Fogg, Erica Akiko Howard, Joan Laage, Kaoru Okumura, Alycia Scott, Helen Thorsen and Shoko Zama with musicians Mike Shannon and Samuel Yoder. 'Wandering & Wondering' 2018 is sponsored by 4Culture and The Artful Garden.

This year's dancers at Seattle Japanese Garden are Sheri Brown, Bruce Fogg, Erica Akiko Howard, Joan Laage, Kaoru Okumura, Alycia Scott and Shoko Zama with music by Gyre (Michael Shannon, David Stanford and Carl Lierman). 'Wandering & Wondering' 2018 is presented by the Seattle Japanese Garden. Kogut Butoh's sponsor for this year's 'Wandering & Wondering' is The Artful Garden.

Here's an audience comment from the 2011 performance:

'Thank you for the beautiful afternoon at the Japanese Garden on Saturday. The musicians and dancers were exquisitely sensitive to the beauty of the garden. An added bonus was the great blue heron who seemed to be joining his gestures to the dance. I sincerely hope this event will be continued next year, and every year after. We and the world need more beauty like this. Thank you to all who made this possible.'

You are cordially invited to attend one or both free performances.
