In loving remembrance of Barbara Bailey

Dear Friends:

We were deeply saddened to learn that Barbara Bailey, a founding member of Pride Foundation, passed away on September 1st.

Barbara was a longtime owner of the independent bookstore Bailey/Coy Books, and a kind, passionate, and tireless advocate for LGBTQ communities and communities of color. She spent her life lifting up the voices of others, by hosting fundraisers for her favorite organizations and candidates, and through making a local bookstore into a powerful community resource at a time when LGBTQ organizations were just beginning to emerge and strengthen.

Around a kitchen table in the early 1980s, Barbara and other activists close to her began a discussion that would lead to the founding of Pride Foundation. It was her passion and vision that helped catalyze the community to come together at that critical moment, and created new opportunities for LGBTQ people across the Northwest.

As a founder, longtime volunteer to our scholarship program, and donor to Pride Foundation, Barbara's generosity had an enormous impact on the student leaders who found affirmation and inspiration from her support over the years.

Those who knew Barbara describe her as fearless, passionate, and fierce in the face of all injustice she encountered. Marschel Paul, a dear friend of Barbara's, offered these words in remembering her:

'Barb had given tremendously to the LGBTQ+ community over the years. Along with a small cadre of concerned activists during the 1980's HIV/AIDS crisis, she helped found Pride Foundation and served on its first board. Her fight for fairness didn't stop there. Later, as a member of the Lambda Legal Board of Directors, she took her passion for equal rights to a national level.

Fifteen years ago, when Barbara turned 60, she threw a huge party, a fantastic celebration at Chevy Chase Beach Cabins, her family's long-time home and enterprise in Port Townsend. There was live music, champagne forever, and a big crowd of people who admired and adored her. Anyone who knew Barb knew they would, at some point, be attending a social event at her home and writing a check to something she (and we all) believed in.

Margaret Sutro, my now legally beloved, and I wanted to do something for Barb's 60th birthday that was as grand as she was. So we came up with the idea of starting a scholarship fund at Pride Foundation in her honor. We quietly went around to the guests at the party and asked if they would contribute to launch the fund. Of course, they wanted to and many of them wrote checks right then and there. Now that Barb is gone, it helps all of us to know that the Barbara Bailey Scholarship Fund lives on.'

All of us at Pride Foundation are better for having known Barbara. We hope you will take a moment to read a loving remembrance of her from last Wednesday's Seattle Times and attend the gathering in celebration of Barbara's life, to be held at 3pm, Sunday, October 21 at the Lakeside School.

Please join us in sending love, comfort, and warmth to Barbara's family and friends.

In loving remembrance,

Katie Carter
Acting CEO
Pride Foundation
