December 2018 theater openings

by Miryam Gordon - SGN A&E Writer

Most years, the town provides a mix of holiday material and counter-programming for those who want to avoid it. The counter-programming is a bit sparse this year, but along with the reprises at ACT Theatre (A Christmas Carol) and Seattle Public Theater (Christmastown), here is a list of productions you might want to check out:

A Very Die Hard Christmas, The Habit Comedy and Seattle Public Theater, 12/1-23

From the comedy writers that have had Seattle in stitches for years, comes A Very Die Hard Christmas, a new musical parody. Sketch writers from The Habit team up with Seattle Public Theater to create a new holiday comedy perfect for those who like their Christmas entertainment with lots of action, '80s jokes, smooth soft rock jams, and snarky German terrorists.

A Charlie Brown Christmas, Taproot Theatre. 12/1-27

The all-ages holiday tradition is back! Charlie Brown is depressed by the never-ending commercialism surrounding the holidays. Thankfully, Linus is there to help him find the true meaning of Christmas in this musical adaptation of the cartoon classic.

Float, Misstresspiece Theater, 12/1-16 (at The Pocket)

We welcome you to a small, Midwestern town for this heart-warming tale of female friendships and new lesbian romance. It's a struggle to be true to yourself in the uphill battle of The Holidays but we're our best selves when we're with friends. This new company is focused on supporting strong, positive depictions of female and LGBTQIA+ characters onstage and creating opportunities for women and LGBTQIA+ artists backstage.

The Dina Martina Christmas Show, ACT Theatre ACTLab, 12/6-24

Miss Martina will be joined by noted accompanist Chris Jeffries, bringing her famed holiday train wreck of a show to ACT for the first time. Like all of Martina's shows, this holiday hit promises to be a wondrous and surreal blend of questionable songs, unnecessary dances, overburdened costumes, and side-splitting video. Miss Martina's favorite seasonal tradition - distributing pointless (and seriously coveted) holiday gifts to lucky audience members - completes one of Seattle's most treasured holiday traditions.

The Judy Garland Christmas Special, Crabgrass Productions, 12/6-22 (at Theatre Off Jackson)

It's 1963 and the producers of Judy Garland's TV show have decided that what she needs is a nice Christmas special, something with the whole family in it: lovely Liza, cutie Lorna and little flamboyant Joey. But where the hell's Judy? Based on the actual, infamous 1963 TV special, this Christmas train wreck features songs of the season, dancing, drag, and of course, one unstoppable force of nature. Plus with a 'special feature' after the main show. Come make the Yuletide gay with the most hysterical comedy this Christmas.

Murder on the Mistletoe Express, Café Nordo, 12/7-29

(No longer 21+, Nordo is recommended for adults 18+.) Board the dining car of the Mistletoe Express and follow intrepid girl detective Becky-June Beasley-Jones (played by drag royalty Butch Alice) as she hurries home to South Taint, Indiana for Grandma's last Christmas. But, murder follows Becky-June like white on rice, and there's a caper to solve before dessert. Writer Scot Augustson gives new meaning to Blue Christmas, with his irreverent humor and jovial blasphemy.

Scott Shoemaker's War on Christmas, at ReBar, 12/7-23

An all-star variety spectacular that is destined to be a new Yule Tide tradition. Come spend an evening with Scott and a cast of Seattle luminaries as they try to figure out who's fighting a war on Christmas and what for? It's a hilarious night of comedy, songs, dance numbers, delightful videos, and partial nudity!
