Arizona Gov. Ducey ignores voters, adds anti-LGBTQ activist Martha McSally to US Senate

NEW YORK (December 18, 2018) - GLAAD, the world's largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today issued the following statement criticizing Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey for selecting Rep. Martha McSally to fill the vacant Senate seat being left by Sen. Jon Kyl at the end of the year. In November, McSally lost a race for the US Senate to Rep. Kyrsten Sinema - who is [bisexual] - and McSally has a long history of anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and record.

'Appointing someone who was rejected by Arizona voters just a month ago is not only a slap in the face to Arizonans but a deliberate and direct attack on LGBTQ people, who have been in Martha McSally's crosshairs for years,' said Drew Anderson, Director of Campaigns and Rapid Response at GLAAD. 'Arizonans will remember Martha McSally for a lot of things, and morphing herself to be a sheer clone of the anti-LGBTQ Donald Trump will be on the top of that list. Her extreme views are out of step with the people of Arizona and have no place in the US Senate.'

Background on Rep. McSally's anti-LGBTQ record:
o Championed an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that permitted federal agencies to discriminate against LGBTQ people.

o Supported a federal constitutional ban on marriage equality.

o Voiced opposition to adding sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression to nondiscrimination protections.

o Opposed repealing the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act.

o Voiced support for the Trump administration's rescinding of guidance that allowed transgender public school students to use bathrooms and facilities in accordance with their gender identities, saying that the Obama era policy was 'federal overreach,' repeal 'needed to be done,' and that 'other children' needed protection from trans children.

o Voted for an unsuccessful amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that 'sought to prohibit funds for medical treatment (other than mental health treatment) related to gender transition to a person entitled to medical care under chapter 55 of title 10, United States Code.'

o Has never once criticized the Trump administration for its transgender military ban.
