State Supreme Court reaffirms ruling against Richland florist

She violated anti-discrimination law, Justices say by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

The Washington State Supreme Court has unanimously reaffirmed its previous decision against a Richland florist who refused to provide flowers to a same-sex wedding.

Baronelle Stutzman violated state anti-discrimination laws by turning away a Gay couple looking for wedding flowers in 2013, the court said.

Washington's high court had already ruled against Stutzman in 2017 but was ordered to review its findings by the US Supreme Court.

In a similar case involving a Colorado baker who refused to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple, the US Supreme Court found that Colorado acted with a bias against the baker's religious beliefs, and it ordered the Washington court to review its findings to be sure no similar bias existed in the Pasco case.

On June 6, Washington's Supreme Court simply reiterated its 2017 findings: Stutzman violated the state law against discrimination on account of sexual orientation.

'Washington state law protects same-sex couples from discrimination based on their sexual orientation, the same way it protects Washingtonians from discrimination based on their religion, veteran or military status, disability, race, and other protected classes,' Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson said in a statement.

'I will continue to uphold these laws and fight to protect Washingtonians from discrimination.' Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys representing Stutzman said they will appeal once again to the US Supreme Court to take her case.
