GLAAD applauds inclusion of LGBTQ issues by NBC News hosts and multiple candidates in Democratic presidential debate

NEW YORK (June 26, 2019) - GLAAD, the world's largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, released the following statement by Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD's president and CEO, after the conclusion of the first 2020 Democratic presidential debate.

'GLAAD commends tonight's inclusion of LGBTQ issues by debate moderators in this first debate of the 2020 presidential cycle. [...] Putting LGBTQ-specific issues front and center stands in stark contrast to the rhetoric and record of the Trump administration, which has put a target on the backs of LGBTQ people and other marginalized communities since the day he took office.'

GLAAD's chief programs officer, Zeke Stokes, attended the debate and was live-tweeting from @GLAAD. GLAAD responded after debate moderators prompted a conversation that included the top issues facing LGBTQ Americans, with many candidates detailing how they would empower and promote LGBTQ acceptance if elected president of the United States.

GLAAD has been on the frontlines protecting the progress the LGBTQ community has made since the beginning of President Trump's administration. This administration has been responsible for issuing more than 115 attacks against LGBTQ Americans in policy and rhetoric since taking office in 2017. The entire list of the Trump administration's anti-LGBTQ actions, which include Trump's ban on allowing transgender Americans from enlisting in our nation's armed forces to opposing the Equality Act, can be found by visiting GLAAD's Trump Accountability Project at www.glaad.org/trump.
