House votes to overturn Trump's Trans military ban

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

The US House of Representatives voted on July 11 to overturn Donald Trump's ban on Transgender people serving in the military.

The vote was 242 to 187, with 10 Republicans joining Democrats to pass the measure.

Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) introduced the reversal as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a must-pass piece of legislation that funds the military.

Speier's amendment stipulates that any person who meets gender-neutral occupational standards can serve in the military regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, or sex, including gender identity or sexual orientation.

'Over the last three years, 14,000 transgender service members have served openly and successfully,' Speier said. She represents a California district that includes the southwestern portion of San Francisco and the northern portion of San Mateo County, bordering Speaker Nancy Pelosi's district.

Speier is chair of the Military Personnel Subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee. The full committee is chaired by Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA).

Rep. Anthony G. Brown (D-MD), vice chair of the Armed Services Committee, tweeted about Trans service members 'We need their skills. We need their courage. We need their patriotism. And they need our support in this fight for the right to fight.'

The NDAA, with Speier's amendment, will now go to the Senate. The underlying bill must pass in order to fund the military, but Republican senators may seek to strip Speier's amendment from the bill.
