Bellevue gay couple celebrates 50th anniversary

July 4th was more than a holiday to Bob Masters and Larry Siskind, both 84. It was the celebration of their 50th year together. To mark the occasion their friends and loved ones held a bash attended by 22 people, with good food, joviality and a large anniversary cake. Bob and Larry took the first cut as photos were taken. Larry related how they first met.

'We first met in a Los Angeles bar, BJ's, in 1969. That was before personal computers, smartphones, iPads or even Pride parades. On a whim I happened to slip into the bar and sat on a stool. Bob stared at me with his big brown eyes and came over and without any introduction, 'offered to take me home, merely to snuggle, no sex.' Because he was drunk I didn't take him seriously, but reluctantly agreed to give him my phone number. The next morning he called and later came to my home. We got to know one another and soon we were dating. He fell hard when I promised never to leave him and we then went on a wonderful honeymoon visiting England, Holland, Germany and Denmark. It was the first of many trips abroad, including Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin and East Germany at the height of the Cold War. All together we have visited 50 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa. We have also been to Australia and New Zealand. We visited fellow gays in many of these places. In 1974 we settled down and bought a house in the Hollywood Hills. And in 1990 to get away from the L.A. smog we moved to Bellevue.'

When asked whether they would do it over again, the answer was 'You bet we would.'
