GenPRIDE holds workshop for LGBTQ elders 'Finding Home'

by Tony Krebs - GenPRIDE Center Volunteer

Seattle and its surrounding towns are facing an affordable housing crisis, one that hits LGBTQ elders especially hard. Many LGBTQ elders appreciate the urban region's access to services, transit, historic gay neighborhoods, and pro-gay climate. Yet, these same elders feel financially squeezed by the rapid increase in Seattle-area rents and property taxes, with many having to cope on a fixed income, whether as renters or homeowners.

On Tuesday, October 8th at 6pm, GenPRIDE Seattle is offering a free workshop addressing this issue, called 'Pro-Active Aging: Finding Home'. Come meet with other LGBTQ elders from the area and explore what you want in your next home, as you age.

In the Oct 8th workshop:

* Learn about different models for shared housing and intentional community living, such as: 'in-law' apartments & backyard cottages, 'Golden Girls'-style homesharing, group-buying of adjoining properties, cohousing communities, co-living rental suites, subsidized senior housing, assisted living facilities, ex-pat living overseas, etc.

* Compare the pros & cons of each approach, especially for LGBTQ elders.

Next, in two optional follow-up sessions on Oct 15 & 22, participants will compare and discuss the different shared-housing models and decide which seem best-suited for their own needs and interests. Then you'll draw up a personal housing plan to pro-actively move toward the home you want, and find others who share a similar vision.

All sessions are free and open to LGBTQ elders, caregivers, friends & loved ones. Sessions are held at the GenPRIDE office above the Broadway Market QFC, 401 Broadway E # 223, Seattle, WA. 98102.

To reserve your spot or for more information, contact GenPRIDE: (206) 393-3400 or info@gapseattle.org, www.gapseattle.org
