Don't Amend issues alert over anti-Gay 'Marriage Protection Amendment'
The Senate Judiciary Committee will vote next week on the so-called "Marriage Protection Amendment," also called the Marriage Protection Act. The Amendment would enshrine anti-Gay hate into the federal Constitution. The time to stop this amendment is now!
If your senators are on this committee* please write to them today. Even if your senators are not members of the Judiciary Committee, please write to them now to voice your opposition to this amendment. Your senators can pressure their colleagues on the committee to vote against the amendment and can be reminded of your views now in case the vote comes to the Senate floor.
With the nation distracted by other concerns and with support for Republicans spiraling downward, Bush and his friends are trying to use this opportunity to pass the amendment. Republicans have a majority in both houses of Congress and in most state legislatures, so we cannot afford to lose now.
Tell your senators that you want them to vote AGAINST the Marriage Protection Act/Amendment. It is wrong to write discrimination into the Constitution, a document meant to preserve the rights and freedoms of all citizens. Nor should the Constitution be used as a political football in an attempt to gain votes or popular support. Tell your Senators that you support civil rights for all people. It's OK to tell your personal story about why this vote is important to you, but do not use angry or threatening language in your letter (it's counterproductive).
Use this link, http://ga4.org/taskforce/leg-lookup/search.tcl, to find and write to your Senators electronically. Once you have typed in your zip code, click on the "send message" below the picture of each senator. Faxes and phone calls to Congress are more effective than e-mails but e-mails are better than nothing. Make sure you include your full name and mailing address in your message so that your Senators know that you are constituents.
Because the Senate is likely to be on recess in parts of December and January, they will be in your home states. This is the perfect opportunity to lobby them or their staff in person. Call their local offices to schedule a lobby visit. You can find these office telephone numbers at http://capwiz.com/fconl/dbq/officials/ by typing in your zip code, then clicking on your senators' pictures. Click on "more district offices" for a complete list.
For a list of Senate Judiciary members, please go to http://judiciary.senate.gov/members.cfm.
