Where It's At
Backstreet Boys take center stage at KISS 106.1's 'Jingle Bell Bash', Death Cab for Cutie headline 107.7 The End's 'Deck the Hall Ball'
By Albert Rodriguez - SGN A & E Writer

KISS 106.1's "Jingle Bell Bash 8" w/ Backstreet Boys, Frankie J, Lifehouse, Pussycat Dolls, The Click Five, Natasha Bedingfield, The Veronicas, Rihanna and Tyler Hilton

Sunday, December 4 - 4:00 pm

Tacoma Dome - Tix through Ticketmaster / $30, $40, $50

I admit it. I'm a sucker for boy bands. Even pop ones. Which explains why I'm so giddily excited about attending this Sunday's "Jingle Bell Bash 8", put on by Seattle radio station KISS 106.1. Taking center stage at this year's holiday concert are the world famous Backstreet Boys. The multi-Grammy nominated group sold millions of records during the 90s pop boom and then called it quits right about the time we entered the new millennium.

During their peak, the Backstreet Boys managed to attract a strong Gay following. Need I say how? Okay, I will. It was partly because of a successful string of chart topping hits that includes "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)", "I Want It That Way" and my personal favorite, "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely". But their Gay popularity also had to do with the fact that they were young, cute, fit and clean cut. Not to mention they didn't have a problem taking off their shirts on stage and posing for a Rolling Stone magazine cover in a pool. The Backstreet Boys regrouped at the start of 2005, after individual band members attempted solo careers, entered rehab, got married and started families, and of course, one of them poked Paris Hilton.

Joining the Backstreet Boys at KISS 106.1's 'Bash' are a pair of other Gay eye candy acts, Lifehouse and The Click Five. Gay-supported rising stars Pussycat Dolls, Rihanna and Natasha Bedingfield are scheduled to perform too. Bedingfield will be a co-presenter at Thursday's Grammy Awards nominations announcement in New York. Rounding out the lineup for Sunday's concert are Frankie J, The Veronicas and super hottie Tyler Hilton. I'm told Hilton will perform outside the Dome prior to the start of the main show and at some point will bounce his fine bootie on stage to help emcee the event. For more details on "Jingle Bell Bash 8", visit KISS 106.1's website www.kiss1061.com. There are a couple of Gay bars in Tacoma for pre or post-show cocktails and you can find the addresses in the SGN's neighborhood map. I'll be near the stage and hoping to grab some Backstreet tail, and if I do you'll hear about it next week. - A. Rodriguez

Pre-concert CD recommendation: The Hits: Chapter One featuring: "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely", "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)", "I Want It That Way" and "Larger Than Life".

107.7 The End's "Deck the Hall Ball" w/ Death Cab for Cutie, Harvey Danger, Aqueduct and The Saturday Knights

Thursday, December 8 - 8:00 pm

The Showbox - Sold out

I can't seem to get enough of Death Cab for Cutie these days. How about you? The once Bellingham-based quartet, now true Seattleites, have wowed fans and the music industry alike with their stellar big label release Plans. Once a regionally known club act, Death Cab for Cutie struck gold this year with national airplay, heavy rotation on MTV2 and an appearance on the sexy teenysomething drama The O.C. (the show's star Benjamin McKenzie is a Death Cab fanatic). What's the hype behind this band? It's their sound. Deep, thoughtful lyrics coated with melodramatic pop-rock backgrounds that just grows on you. It's perfect break-up music. It's soothing when you're feeling down. And it's exactly what the doctor ordered when you need to relax and let the day unwind, no matter how stressful or depressing it was.

Death Cab for Cutie, who sold out two performances at the Paramount Theatre a few weeks ago, are headlining 107.7 The End's "Deck the Hall Ball" at The Showbox on Thursday night. The local alternative radio station scaled down its seasonal shindig from last year's monstrous show that featured Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, Snow Patrol, Keane, Modest Mouse and The Shins. Carrying the theme "Home for the Holidays", The End formed 2005's DTHB lineup with homebrewed talent like Death Cab for Cutie, Harvey Danger, Aqueduct and The Saturday Knights.

This concert sold out in an hour, but one pair of tickets will be given away, with meet n' greet passes, at DJ No Name's Alternative Garage Sale (www.1077theend.com). Proceeds from this ticket sale and from the entire concert benefit the Vera Project, Seattle's non-profit organization for kids who dig music and need a place to do so with other people their age. I'm told one pair of tickets will be given away at The Showbox's Green Room, during Rocky Votolato's free set before the DTHB kickoff. - A. Rodriguez

Pre-concert CD recommendation: Plans featuring "Soul Meets Body", "Your Heart is an Empty Room", "Marching Bands of Manhattan" and "Summer Skin".
