Reduced government funding threatens the survival of Three Cedars Adult Home Care Center
By David Luc Nguyen/Teriyaki Temple
- SGN Contributing Writer
After hearing AHAT (AIDS Housing Association of Tacoma) also known as Three Cedars Adult Home Care Center received reduced government grants which were critical to the operation and survival of the facility, local community members and drag queens have rallied together to raise money to ensure the home continues to provide essential services for persons ill with AIDS in Pierce and Kitsap Counties.
Community Members and Club owners Scott Lay and Anthony West (also known as Von Voshell and Vivaka Vanderock) are hosting a fundraiser for AHAT on Saturday, December 10th, 2005 at On The Rocks Club in Tacoma. The event has been dubbed the "Hag-A-Ho Ball" and will be hosted by Princess Serenity Vanderock and will include top-notch entertainers from cities all over Washington and from all over the country. Entertainers from as far as Hawaii, California, Texas, and Denver will be flying in specially for this event. The evening will also feature the talents of northwest comic Mike Agostini and Kenny Kerr from Las Vegas.
Three Cedars opened is doors in 1989 dedicating its services to helping persons who are critically ill with AIDS by providing necessities such as a safe environment, affordable housing, and innovative health care by responsible and caring staff and volunteers. The staff and volunteers also provide a supportive family environment, which emphasizes individual dignity and respect for diversity. Most importantly the center gives its residents the opportunity to get better and prolong their independence and if needed, gives support for end of life issues. A statement issued by the non-profited stated, "while end-of-life-care is at the heart of what they do, the center proudly boasts that currently over two-thirds of its residents are able to move back into the community after stabilizing their health and achieving medical adherence." This is prime example of why we need to get behind Three Cedars and support them in any way we can by donating our time by volunteering or giving financially.
The term donor fatigue has been thrown around a lot lately with so many horrible disasters taking place this year. People have given to countless charities and causes and it seems they've forgotten that we still have no cure for AIDS. We may have made medical advances but people still dying of AIDS and that means we still have a need services like AHATS. I had the opportunity to speak with Kit Evans, Interim Executive Director for AHAT this week and I asked her "how long can AHAT stay open in its currently financial situation?" In a very upbeat and confident voice she answer, "We will always stay open as long as people continue to believe in our cause. We will continue to solider on!" If the AIDS Housing of Tacoma doesn't receive more funding through our donations its client services could become limited, because the staff will have to redirect their energies to maintaining basic operations such as getting enough food, paying the utilities, and other day to day services rather than providing attention where it is most needed, the facilities' residents.
Please join AHAT, The Imperial Court of Tacoma, and Tacoma's Gay Community at On the Rocks at 728 Pacific Avenue in Tacoma, Washington 98402. Show begins at 7:30 PM For more information please call Dan McKnight at 253.228.7230. We will see you there!
