Trump kills Herman Cain

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Herman Cain, former CEO of Godfather's Pizza and candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012, died July 29 from COVID-19. He was 74.

He had been diagnosed with the virus and admitted to a hospital on July 1. While there he had reportedly had difficulty breathing and was on oxygen therapy.

When and how Cain was infected with the COVID virus is unknown, but he attended Donald Trump's in-person, maskless political rally in Tulsa on June 20. Eleven days later he was in the hospital. According to scientists, the time from initial exposure to COVID-19 till the patient becomes symptomatic may be two to 14 days.

Cain was a vocal Trump supporter and a fixture of "Black Voices for Trump," a Republican front group.

In return, Trump considered appointing Cain to the Federal Reserve Board, but opposition from several Republican senators scuttled that plan.

Cain started his upward trajectory as a ranking executive at Burger King, and was hired as Godfather's CEO in 1986. While at Godfather's, he also served as chair of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.

In 1996 Cain left Godfather's and the Federal Reserve to become president of the National Restaurant Association. He was also an advisor to Bob Dole's 1996 presidential campaign.

In 2012 Cain ran for the Republican nomination with his famous 9-9-9 tax reform plan. The plan would have replaced the current tax structure with a flat 9% personal income tax, a 9% business transactions tax, and a 9% federal sales tax.

He later dropped out of the race amid sexual harassment allegations, which he and his wife denied.
