Katrina: Money and materials needed, survivor tells Seattle audience
Katrina: Money and materials needed, survivor tells Seattle audience
"Don't let this vicious, inhuman thing that is happening in New Orleans happen. Don't let them do this to human beings," said Katrina survivor Mama Dee.

by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid - SGN Staff Writer

About 75 people and various activist organizations around Seattle listened patiently to the speakers, some from New Orleans, talk about the tragic aftermath of Hurricane Katrina (that the mainstream media is now mostly ignoring) and the fall out from the disaster on Gulf Coast a month ago. Union representatives, members of LELO, a local activist organization, as well as members of Radical Women and the International Socialist Party joined the speakers in their call for more money and materials to help rebuild the destroyed areas of New Orleans.

The rally at the Burt Nelson Warehouse, located on the waterfront on Pier 106, was the first public gathering to bring activists like Curtis Muhamad and Mama Dee, who are from New Orleans, to Seattle. They have been busy in the past weeks gathering funds and materials to send to New Orleans as well as going to the ravaged area to help with rescue efforts and rebuilding efforts.

Of the speakers, the most riveting speech came from Mama Dee, who spoke of her earlier involvement in the labor movement, where she met men like A. Phillip Randolph, and working with the NAACP in New Orleans, and now having to burn wood on her lawn to keep warm. "Don't let this vicious, inhuman thing that is happening in New Orleans happen. Don't let them do this to human beings," she said, her voice cracking with emotion. "We don't have any heat, no water, no mail service. Nothing that is normal is working in New Orleans. We have to stand up, every one of us, and not let this happen."

Dee was barely able to speak through her tears. The audience was visibly moved and cheered for her, some giving her a standing ovation.
