| Buzz on new CD, tour and Gay sex-friendly music video by The Strokes; Elvis impersonation contest coming to EMP; Showtime at the Apollo holding local talent auditions |
New CD by The Strokes is hot, and so is the Gay horseplay in their latest music video
The Strokes have given me a five yearlong boner. Interestingly, it's not due to their looks or the tightness of their pants. Although, I have been known to drool during the band's live performances. But truth be known, it's their music that excites me. 2000's Is This It is easily one of the best albums of the new millennium and ranks right up there with the most impressive rock debuts in history. And no, I'm not on drugs. It clearly is an amazing rock n' roll record. The group's sophomore effort Room on Fire (SGN's Top Ten Albums/CDs, 2003) was commercially more successful than its predecessor and earned The Strokes beaucoup exposure, like front covers on the hippest of the hip music mags.
To kick off 2006 with a humongous bang, The Strokes are releasing their third album First Impressions of Earth on January 3. The initial single from the CD, "Juice Box", landed inside the SGN's Top Ten Singles/Tracks list of 2005. Even hotter than that piece of information, for what it's really worth, is the music video for "Juice Box". It starts off with The Strokes being interviewed in a recording studio by seriously twisted comedian David Cross, and then it moves onto two chicks making out and groping each other on a building rooftop. Then, out of fucking nowhere, towards the end of the video two dudes lock mouths and get their freak on inside a bathroom stall. Totally hot. In fact, I think one of the guys in the video is drummer Fab Morretti. And I'm not surprised. I've been told by a very good source that The Strokes, though completely straight, proudly endorse male-on-male tongue massages. With each other. But no word yet on whether any of them have gone to second base.
The new CD by The Strokes is A-plus. It's very different, as a whole, from Is This It and Room on Fire. It's all over the place. It's old school, it's raw, it's funky, it's dirty and it's a little whacky. But it's totally satisfying. Prime cuts include "You Only Live Once", "On the Other Side", "Ize of the World", "Razorblade" and the already mentioned "Juice Box". By the way, you can download the hot music video of that single at www.thestrokes.com. Click on the "music" option. As for tour dates, what I know at this time is that The Strokes will be in Seattle sometime in early April. That's subject to change. But that's what I know at this very moment. I'll tip you on confirmed concert dates in the area as soon as I get them. Just go buy The Strokes new CD First Impressions of Earth and support a band making incredibly good rock music. And a band comfortable enough with their own sexuality that they don't mind peeking over the fence to see how everyone else likes to get busy.
2006 Elvis Invitationals at Experience Music Project are fit for a 'king'
Got rock n' roll? How about a pair of blue suede shoes? Or, sideburns the size of Tennessee? Okay, I'll stop being cheesy and just tell you about next weekend's Elvis Invitationals at Experience Music Project. The museum will be jam-packed with "The King" impersonators competing for $1000 worth of fabulous prizes and the right to be named top "hound" dog. Each contestant will have the opportunity to perform one song from the icon's portfolio and to strut his (or her) stuff, in glitzy costume of course, backed by the Memphis Mafia all-star band. Talk about fun, this event should be a whale of a good time! No pun intended.
Besides the competition, the crowd will be treated to a special anniversary revue featuring past Elvis Invitational winners and a performance by the Night of the Living Elvis band. So, if you're brave enough to enter the contest and have what it possibly takes to "get all shook up" (I couldn't resist, seriously), then call (206) 517-4826 or email sappywguy@yahoo.com. If you'd prefer to take in the action as a spectator, the admission is $13 for EMP members and $15 for non-members. The 10th Annual Elvis Invitationals take place on Saturday, January 7 beginning at 8:00 pm. Advance tickets are available at EMP by calling (206) 770-2702 or 1-(877) I-LISTEN.
Showtime at the Apollo scouting Seattle and Tacoma for talented amateurs
If Elvis isn't your gig, yet you think of yourself as being musically gifted, then consider auditioning for Showtime at the Apollo on Tour. The long-running amateur talent show is holding tryouts in Tacoma and Seattle for a performance at the Paramount Theatre on February 11. From there, winners will have the chance to lay it on the line at a national competition being held in New York City. But first things first. You need to audition for a panel of Apollo judges for a shot at performing on February 11. If you're in Tacoma, auditions will be held at the Theatre on the Square (TAG Building, 901 Broadway) on Saturday, January 7. In Seattle, auditions will be held at the Broadway Performance Hall (1625 Broadway) on Sunday, January 8. Sign-up times for both locations are 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, with auditions beginning at 11:00 am. For details, visit www.theparamount.com or call (206) 467-5510. Give em' what you got, baby. And if you know someone who deserves a bigger stage than their own living room, please pass the word on.
