The GSBA announced December 16 that its search for a president and CEO is finally over. Michael Soto, formerly the executive director of Equality Arizona, will be taking over the mantle in February of 2022.

The statement comes over a year after Louise Chernin, who held the position for 19 years, publicly declared her retirement.

"We are thrilled to have Michael joining GSBA as our new President & CEO," said Jay Petterson, the GSBA board chair, in a press release email. "His deep experience with policy and advocacy will be instrumental to GSBA's continued success regarding the issues facing small businesses across the state. Michael has been a fierce advocate for equality for all for a number of years. His experience on the national stage will further GSBA as a leader for the LGBTQ+ community."

Soto holds a BA in women's and gender studies and an MS in justice studies from Arizona State University. He plans to work toward a PhD in justice studies starting this year, also at ASU.

During the 2020 presidential election, sources close to Soto say he and his team played an important role in turning the state blue at a critical time.

Soto also served the community as the economic equity policy director for the Arizona Community Action Association prior to his tenure at Equality Arizona. "I've been dedicated to advocating for the Arizona LGBTQ+ community, having led a team of professionals to build its political power," Soto said in the press release.

Despite being a lifelong resident of Arizona, the new GSBA president is ready for a little Seattle rain. "I am excited to call the Pacific Northwest my new home and am proud to work toward equality and inclusion in the Seattle area and beyond through GSBA."

The GSBA also announced that there will be plenty of opportunities for its members to get to know Soto, both virtually and in person.
