Budapest: Pride march against homophobic laws
Reuters reported July 24 on a Budapest Pride march against a new law in Hungary that bans the subject of homosexuality in the country's schools. Thousands turned up for the event, with one attendee calling the new law a "diversion that tries to tear this country apart" and a "provocation for elections." A survey last month showed that 46% of Hungarians support same-sex marriage, and more than 40 embassies in Hungary backed Budapest Pride. The European Commission has continued to pursue legal action against Hungary for discriminating against LGBTQ people.

Tokyo: Record numbers of LGBTQ Olympians
NBC reported on July 23 that a record number of over 160 out LGBTQ athletes will be competing in this year's Tokyo Olympics, which is about triple the number that competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics. The Games will include the world's first openly Transgender athletes, like New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard. Also for the first time, a Pride House has been officially recognized by the International Olympics Committee, with the intent of creating a lasting center for the LGBTQ community in Tokyo.
