Guatemala: Congress drops ban on Gay marriage
The BBC reported on March 17 that Guatemala's congress has shelved its new law that would prohibit same-sex marriage and raise the prison sentences for women seeking abortion. Although the law was approved by a large majority in Congress, President Alejandro Giammattei threatened to veto it, saying it violated the country's constitution and certain international agreements.

Currently, abortion is banned in Guatemala except in life-threatening cases, and it carries a sentence with jail time — which would have been tripled under the new law. It would also have banned schools from teaching that "anything other than heterosexuality is normal."

Advocates for the law cite traditional family values. LGBTQ and women's rights groups were outraged when it passed Congress, with activist Alma Chacón calling it a return to the Middle Ages; they welcomed Congress's decision to put the law aside.

Ukraine sends soldiers to Eurovision 2022
LGBTQ Nation reported on March 19 that the Ukrainian rap group Kalush Orchestra intends to represent Ukraine in Eurovision 2022, despite a number of its members being part of the war effort against Russia. The band says they will regroup to record a performance of their song "Stefania" from Ukraine, rather than perform live in Italy, which is hosting the event.

LGBTQ Nation also predicted that Kalush Orchestra, if they perform, will surely win the competition, since viewers often vote based on political opinions as much as musical preferences. Meanwhile, the European Broadcasting Union has banned Russia from the event.
Eurovision is significant to the LGBTQ community, with such gender-nonconforming contestants as Conchita Wurst, Roxen, and Bilal Hassani.
