Emerald City Mudhens debut new kit design at Wildrose

Amid friends and chosen family at famed Lesbian bar Wildrose, the Emerald City Mudhens, a local womxn’s and Nonbinary rugby team, debuted their new, updated jerseys for the upcoming fall season and beyond.

The new kit keeps the Mudhens’ forest green color but adds an extra oomph to the clawlike slashes emerging from the midsection, using a dueling, black and brown palette. Slashes also appear along the sleeves, beside a series of stripes along the right side. The looks were designed by Akuma, a London apparel team that specializes in custom rugby kits.

The kits are part of a larger rollout, which is slowly moving on from striped jerseys and toward a new, modernized feel. Last year, an all-new logo by artist Alexa Shikar, a longtime member of the team, debuted.

The team is fiercely, unapologetically Queer, and members have been supportive of their Trans and Nonbinary colleagues through thick and thin. For example, when USA Rugby began implementing a ban on Trans players in women’s matches, the Mudhens’ social media team memorably responded:

“Fuck USA Rugby. Trans pride forever, rugby is for everyone, and we give each other flowers afterward.” (It’s worth noting that the flowers were literal, which the team gave to the Stellar Sealions of Olympia after a match that spring.)

After a summer break, the Mudhens will be back on the field for their upcoming fall season, with an expected start of September 12 at Warren G. Magnuson Park.
