Our endorsement for Washington House of Representatives 37th District Position 2 is Jaelynn Scott! As a longtime LGBTQIA+ community activist and executive director of the Lavender Rights Project, Scott has shown time and again her commitment to tackling the systemic issues that marginalized communities face. She now intends to take that to the next level as a state legislator. 

Scott is an articulate and passionate civil rights advocate. As a community leader, she has been at the forefront of challenging the anti-LGBTQIA+, anti-BIPOC rhetoric and legislation that has increasingly become the norm since Trump’s reelection. In her time as executive director of the Lavender Rights Project, Scott has been able to build an intersectional and culturally informed set of programs and resources for the city’s residents. With the challenges facing marginalized communities becoming more acute, Scott hopes to counteract the harm being done at the federal level as a state legislator. 

A firm believer in the necessity of progressive policy, Scott is running on a platform of universal healthcare and childcare, corporate and AI data center taxes, opening a public bank, and the decommodification of housing, among other things. She is inspired to institute these ideas in order to strengthen, aid, and protect those who are in most need of government assistance. 

After losing her job as a flight attendant following the 9/11 attacks, Scott struggled to get back on her feet and teetered on the edge of homelessness. She credits the support of a social worker for helping her pull her out of that desperate situation, and since then she has believed in the value of having a strong net of social services. Now running for state office, she hopes to bring that vision to fruition. 

“I want that for all Washingtonians. I want that for everyone in the 37th,” she said.
