Walking into a frame shop with an original, irreplaceable piece of art is nerve-racking. This wasn't a print you could reorder or a canvas you could replace. It was the real thing, by a renowned artist, and I was entrusting strangers with it.
Frame Central made it easier than I expected. The staff took their time with me — no rushing, no vague reassurances. They walked me through the framing options and were straightforward about how they'd handle my one-of-a-kind piece. Transparency matters when you're leaving something truly exceptional in someone else’s hands.
A week later, I came back and wasn't prepared for how stunning it turned out. The framing didn't just protect the artwork — it elevated it.
Located at 901 E. Pike Street in the heart of Seattle’s Capitol Hill, Frame Central has been a local favorite since 1987. The shop offers a wide range of services, from custom framing and shadow boxes to sports and jersey framing, fine art printing, gallery wall design, and wholesale work.

To better understand what makes Frame Central stand out, I spoke with assistant manager Erin Arata about the shop’s approach to framing, creativity, and community.
Frank Gaimari: What first drew you to framing as a craft, and what keeps you excited about it today?
Erin Arata: I first started framing after responding to a general labor ad on Craigslist in Colorado. It was a small operation that began in a garage and later moved into a warehouse. I was an artist, but I never considered framing a career. My boss at the time taught me to be passionate about the process and helped me develop my skills.
Over time, I helped grow that company by becoming the primary framer. When I moved to Seattle ten years ago, I immediately found the nearest frame shop and applied for a job. I’ve been with Frame Central ever since.
I've stayed in this career because I enjoy working with my hands and embodying the craftsperson's spirit. I love using my creativity and perfectionism in a practical, rewarding, and fulfilling environment. I enjoy tackling new challenges and creating something beautiful and long-lasting.
FG: How does having an all–openly Gay team affect the way customers experience this shop?
EA: I believe that having an openly Gay team positively impacts how customers experience this shop. As Queer individuals in today’s environment, it is deeply reassuring to feel safe. Walking into a new space and being greeted with a welcoming smile, Pride flags, and Queer icons helps put your heart at ease. We welcome people of all backgrounds.
FG: For someone who has never used a custom frame shop, how would you describe the materials and options you offer?
EA: When it comes to options, we offer plenty! Our custom framing shop features over 700 different moldings. We also carry premade frames in standard sizes. Even if a custom frame isn’t within your budget, we can mat your artwork to fit the next standard size or assemble a simple custom package. Believe it or not, I’ve even reused frames found at thrift stores. We’re committed to getting the job done.
FG: What does it mean to you to work on Capitol Hill specifically?
EA: I am incredibly proud to serve the vibrant Capitol Hill community. Our neighborhood is alive with a dynamic, thriving art scene, and my shop is honored to be part of it. We take part in the celebrated Second Thursday Art Walk, and over the years, I’ve lost count of how many local artists we've had the privilege to help showcase through framing. Every day, I see my Queer family walking past the shop, many of whom have stopped in over the years to discuss framing options or share their projects. Serving and supporting everyone in this diverse and creative community brings me genuine joy.
FG: How do you help a customer who feels overwhelmed by all the frame and matte options?
EA: We start by understanding the client's needs, then present a few initial options. If the client has no specific preferences, we enjoy exploring color matching and asking where the piece will be displayed.
When finalizing the design, price often influences the decision, as our options can vary significantly in cost. If price isn’t the main concern, I recommend the “phone a friend” method — inviting colleagues to help review options and share recommendations.
What sets us apart is that we are the only frame shop offering a 30-day risk-free design guarantee. If a client takes their finished piece home and it doesn’t suit their space, they have 30 days to return it and request a redesign. If the new materials cost more, they simply pay the difference.
As someone who can be indecisive, I understand how important it is for clients to be satisfied with their art. Our aim is always to ensure they love the final product.
FG: What’s a project you’re especially proud of, and what made it stand out?
EA: I’ve been doing this for 16 years, so it’s hard to choose just one. The most iconic was an original Andy Warhol screen print of Marsha P. Johnson. Most recently, a returning client brought in a cool screen print of a shipwreck with holographic foil elements. We used a color-changing mat that shifts green and blue depending on the angle of the light. Then we chose a super cool verdigris frame with a unique texture that looks like corroded copper. It looked like it had just been plucked from the sea, but with a modern twist.
FG: What do you hope a first-time customer feels the moment they walk through the door?
EA: I hope they feel welcome. Everyone on my staff is very sweet and understanding. Framing can be intimidating. Our goal is to guide people toward the best design for their art. We do not upsell or push anyone beyond their limits. I hope people feel inspired to be creative and trust us as respectful guides who enhance their artwork.
