On September 26, Stone Soup Crew held a community resource fair at Cal Anderson Park. The event included food, a DJ, and booths staffed by several organizations. In addition to being about providing food, clothing, and necessities to those who are struggling, it also celebrated the first anniversary of SSC’s formation.

Members of SSC, a transgender- and BIPOC-led organization, have been coming to the park every Wednesday since September 2025 to provide hot meals to unhoused people. They decided to host a fair to commemorate one year since the founding of SSC. 

SSC members provided warm meals out of the shelter house. Additionally, a DJ performed, and there a table for a silent auction, in which one of the items was a painting of Jimothy with Hot Rat Summer. 

The park’s Sunbowl Meadow had many booths staffed by mutual aid organizations that have supported SSC throughout the year, in addition to a clothing drive. The organizations included Seattle Roots Community Health, El Centro de la Raza,  the Gender Equity Movement, and the Kawaguchi O’Connor Initiative (KOI). 

“It has been amazing,” said codirector of SSC Elle Cree. “Seattle turns out when you call, and we’ve had several organizations that have shown up here. I am very impressed… We’ve competed with a lot of other events today, and it has truly been wonderful.”

Other activities included an award show recognizing some of the organizations that advocate for the rights of the unhoused, Queer people, and other underrepresented communities. One surprise was the Heart of Service Award, which was given to Cree, along with a heartfelt speech recognizing her as the heart of the organization. Fighting back tears, Cree recounted a funny story in which SSC founder Kate Howard bravely confronted her fear of spiders to retrieve hygiene kits and sleeping bags in a dark shed, for those in need.

Cree also gave thanks to many of the people and organizations who showed up, including KOI, recounting a story in which Executive Director Violet Kawaguchi and her organization helped her through tough times. 

“There was a very desperate night on a mountaintop when I thought I was going to come to Seattle and be unhoused,” Cree said. “And Violet, as Violet does, sent me one little text that said, ‘You’re not going to be unhoused; don’t worry,’ and it made all the difference in the world, and every time I turned around, KOI was there.” 

In addition to distributions, SSC has been able to advocate for the unhoused and reduce law enforcement presence in Cal Anderson Park. Cree announced that one of the group's more recent initiatives is to have the City recognize the makeshift memorial dedicated to Trans people who’ve passed away and acknowledge them.
