West Virginia: Trans girl sues

LGBTQ Nation reported June 7 on a Transgender girl in West Virginia who is suing the state for banning her from girls' cross-country. Eleven-year-old Becky Pepper-Jackson was told in a meeting with the principal that she would have to join the boys' team to compete, or not compete at all.

Jackson's parents, with the support of the ACLU, have filed a complaint saying the ban is in violation of Title IX, which bans discrimination in education on the basis of sex. LGBTQ Nation pointed out that the Biden administration has stated that Title IX includes anti-LGBTQ discrimination as well. The complaint also cites lawmakers' anti-Trans statements during the bill's debates, with Gov. Jim Justice all but denying Transgender kids' existence in the state.

Supreme Court cases

The Philadelphia Gay News reported June 1 about the final month of the US Supreme Court's calendar. The Affordable Care Act (ACA), a Catholic foster care agency's refusal to work with same- sex couples, and a Fourth-Amendment case about police warrants are on the line. The PGN stressed how the 5-4 conservative majority could affect the outcomes, especially in the case of the Catholic foster care agency, as previous cases on "religious freedom" have ruled in favor of businesses that refuse service to LGBT+ people.
