Olympics: First Trans athlete chosen

CNN reported June 21 on Laurel Hubbard, who is locked in to become the world's first Transgender athlete chosen to compete at the Olympic Games. Hubbard was selected for New Zealand's national weightlifting team, and will be competing in the women's 87 kg team. Hubbard said she was "grateful and humbled" by the support of many of her fellow New Zealanders, especially in light of the arm injury she sustained in 2018.

Japan: Soccer player comes out as Trans

Reuters reported on June 22 that Japan's Kumi Yokoyama, a player in the National Women's Soccer League for Washington Spirit, has come out as Trans. Yokoyama said living in the United States and Germany showed them a greater acceptance of LGBTQ people, which influenced their coming out. They plan to go through gender-affirming procedures after retirement.

EU: Reaction to Hungary's anti-LGBT laws

Reuters reported June 25 on the EU's response to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's string of anti-LGBT laws. Several EU leaders have condemned Orban's policies in a summit, with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte demanding Hungary either respect LGBT rights or leave the EU entirely. The demand is backed by the EU's highest court, in which Hungary may face a legal challenge that could cut EU funding to the country.
