Montana: ACLU sues state for birth certificate law
NBC News reported July 16 on the ACLU lawsuit against Montana for the state's new law requiring medical confirmation of a surgical sex change when changing one's listed sex on a Montana birth certificate. The two Montanans who filed the suit argue that the law violates their constitutional rights to privacy, equal protection of the law, and due process, since it would require them to reveal private medical information in a public court to change their birth certificate.
Tennessee: Judge blocks anti-Trans bathroom bill
The Philadelphia Gay News reported July 12 on a Tennessee judge's decision to block a law that would require businesses that allow Transgender individuals to use restrooms consistent with their gender identity to post a sign warning customers of that fact. A suit against the law was filed in June by two business owners with Trans-friendly bathroom policies. US District Judge Aleta A. Trauger, who was responsible for the injunction, framed it as a matter of businesses being a welcoming space for communities that include Transgender people.
