Hungary: LGBT issues put to a vote
Reuters reported on July 30 that the Hungarian National Election Committee has approved a list of questions on LGBT issues for a referendum on the country's recent measure that severely limits schools' teaching of subjects like homosexuality and Transgender issues. Among other questions, voters will be asked "whether content that could affect sexual orientation should be shown to children without any restrictions." Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has called the ongoing struggle with the EU over his string of anti-LGBT laws an "ideological war." Polls on voter support of and opposition to his party are mixed, showing a narrow race in an upcoming election.

Ghana: Anti-LGBT bill may be 'the worst'
NBC News reported on July 29 that Ghana's parliament may soon vote on a bill that would make identifying as LGBTQ, or even an LGBTQ ally, a second-degree felony with up to five years of jail time as penalty – or up to 10 years for LGBTQ advocacy. The bill also bans same-sex marriage and adoption, LGBTQ groups, and gender-affirming surgery. Same-sex displays of affection and cross-dressing would be punishable by up to a year. LGBTQ rights groups have expressed shock at the bill's broad scope, saying many members of Ghana's LGBTQ community have been afraid to appear in public. Although a vote for the bill hasn't been scheduled, it has strong parliamentary support.
