New York: HRC president fired for aiding Cuomo
Reuters reported on September 6 that Alphonso David, the president of Human Rights Campaign, has been fired after a report by the New York attorney general said he had advised former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on sexual harassment allegations. According to the report, David was involved in efforts to undermine Cuomo's first accuser, Lindsey Boylan. The co-chairs of the HRC board issued a statement with David's dismissal, saying that he lied about the investigation, and that his actions had violated the group's conflict of interest policy and damaged the reputation of the group.
Brooklyn: Protest against anti-Gay violence calls for LGBTQ safe spaces
NBC reported September 8 on a protest in Brooklyn over the "allegedly" anti-Gay assault of two men at a bodega last Saturday. Abimbola Adelaja, 36, and his friend, 28, were buying sandwiches when the assault occurred. They were beaten, stabbed, robbed, and subjected to anti-Gay slurs. Both victims are stable but shaken by the experience; Adelaja was treated for a collapsed lung, among other injuries. The protesters, Adelaja said, aimed to hold the owners of the bodega accountable for creating a safe space for LGBTQ people. "We're here, we're proud people," he said, "and we're going to stand up for ourselves."
